We were not there!

By the mid-1920s the motor-sporting fraternity was asking the question… Why were French cars dominating the popular 1100cc class in sporting competitions?

Emerging in 1925, the innovative Riley Nine, with its 1100cc engine of great development potential caught the attention of John Godfrey Parry Thomas, then at the height of his fame in the motor sporting world. His stable of cars needed a 1100cc race winner, and he seized the possibilities of the Riley Nine and its engine.

Now we were there!

Through Thomas, his successor Reid Railton, and the Riley Companies in Coventry, the Brooklands Riley Nine Speed Model was introduced and developed to dominate the 1100cc sporting car scene.

This book tells the story of the model's emergence, with some set-backs, but far more triumphs. It illustrates construction details and tracks, as far as possible, the fate or otherwise of each car made. Some had glamorous moments, others have sadly disappeared without trace.

Gathering the material for the book has entailed meeting the knowledgeable, be they owners present or past, and viewing cars and visiting people all over UK, some countries in Europe and also the USA. Australia and New Zealand were just too far away, however there has been solid support from that side of the World.

After sixteen years in preparation, the co-authors have done their best to comply with the advice from the wife of one Brooklands enthusiast…make sure you reflect the spirit of the time, do not write a slavish text-book, and above all, encourage the reader to go on to the next page!

We believe we have succeeded.
